Musculoskeletal Diagnostic Ultrasound
Musculoskeletal diagnostic ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging service used to assess muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and other soft tissues, allowing us to gain a clearer understanding of the cause of your pain or injury and guide your treatment with greater accuracy.
Faqs
Musculoskeletal Diagnostic Ultrasound
What the service includes
Your ultrasound scan is carried out by a highly trained clinician as part of a full clinical assessment, meaning the findings are interpreted immediately in the context of your symptoms, movement and medical history, rather than in isolation, and the results are explained to you clearly on the same day.
What to expect during your appointment
During the appointment a small amount of gel is applied to the skin and a handheld probe is gently moved over the area of concern to produce real-time images on a screen, allowing us to assess both the structure of the tissues and how they move during specific movements, with the scan being comfortable, radiation-free and typically taking 15 to 30 minutes.
How it benefits you
Diagnostic ultrasound allows us to confirm or rule out common soft tissue conditions such as tendon injuries, muscle tears, bursitis or joint inflammation, helping to reduce uncertainty, avoid unnecessary delays and ensure your treatment plan is as targeted and effective as possible.
How it supports your treatment
The information gained from the scan helps guide the most appropriate next steps, whether that is a specific physiotherapy rehabilitation programme, shockwave therapy, activity modification or referral for image-guided injection or further medical input if required.
Why choose diagnostic ultrasound with us
By combining expert physiotherapy assessment with real-time imaging, we are able to offer a more precise, efficient and personalised approach to care, helping you move forward with confidence and a clear plan for recovery.
Conditions we don’t scan
Please note that musculoskeletal diagnostic ultrasound is not suitable for all concerns and we do not provide ultrasound assessment for lumps or bumps, the abdominal region including hernias, or the spine, trunk or pelvis such as the lumbar spine, thoracic spine or cervical spine and neck area.
